Sciatica may feel like back pain, but it is different. It is an injury of your body’s longest and largest nerve, called the sciatic nerve. Mild sciatica can heal on its own, but chronic cases may lead to dull and sharp pain on a daily basis. Some common treatments for sciatica pain include painkillers, physical therapy, and steroid injections.

Mild cases can be treated with non-invasive techniques. However, your sciatica Hamilton doctor may recommend surgery if your pain persists. To treat sciatica, you must first recognize the symptoms on time. To ensure the compression nerve is to blame for your pain, you should know the warning signs of a sciatic nerve.

Top sciatica symptoms to look out for

    • Pain or burning sensations radiating down to your leg.

Pain from sciatica occurs in the lower back of your body when the sciatic nerve gets pinched or compressed. The sciatic nerve extends from your spine to your buttocks and down to your legs, which is why the lower back pain radiates to your legs as well. If you are experiencing pain that spreads from your lower back to your buttocks and legs, it may be a sign of a sciatic nerve.

    • Weakness or numbness in the leg.

Besides pain, you may also experience weakness and numbness in your thighs and lower parts of your leg. The pinched nerve becomes unable to transmit signals, resulting in weakness. You may find lifting your leg while walking challenging, or your leg might give out when you stand up. Trouble walking or lifting your legs can make it difficult to carry out your daily chores by complicating mobility and balance.

    • Temperature differences.

While this is not a common symptom, some patients with sciatica may experience a sensation of coldness in one leg, especially in the lower limb or foot. This occurs due to the compression of the nerve and abnormal sensory feedback. People who experience these symptoms should begin taking measures to relieve pressure on the sciatica nerve. However, remember that cold sensations can also happen for various other reasons.

    • Reduced strength.

As you would already know, nerves play a great role in helping you move. They provide your brain with sensory information; in turn, your brain tells your hands how to react. Nerves establish communication between the brain and your body. Therefore, your legs won’t function properly if your nerves do not work as they should. As a result, you may experience a lack of strength or energy.

These are the top symptoms of a sciatic nerve. Consult a doctor today.
