6 Important Denture Care Tips

Proper care is the key to making your dentures last. Let’s face it, brushing dentures can take a back seat to other daily tasks once you get dentures. Once your dentures are on, you are probably not spending much time worrying about how well they fit or what it will be like to wear them. At this point, you may only brush and floss daily if the instructions from your dentist tell you to.

In order for your dentures to last longer and perform better for as long as possible, there are a few important things that need care through tooth brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings by the dentist.

Here are 6 important denture care tips.

  • Do not expose your dentures to hot water

No matter how well you brush them, dentures will get dirty. We may not be able to prevent the food particles and plaque from getting between our teeth and on our gums. But once your dentures are on, you don’t want to take a chance at causing damage by submerging them in hot water.

  • Keep your dentures moist

If your dentures are dry, they can shrink and crack. This will make them uncomfortable to wear and difficult to take care of. Keep a small case of some sort with your dentures, and have a bottle of water or other liquid with you when away from home.

  • Mind the denture seal

When eating, the seal of your dentures can suffer. Be sure you have brushed your dentures thoroughly before placing them back in your mouth. You should mind the denture seal every time you eat or drink.

  • Meet your dentist for regular check-ups

It’s important to keep an eye on how your dentures fit. You should also meet with your dentist for cleanings and check-ups at least once every 6 months. If you have any questions about the way your dentures fit, ask a dentist before any problem occurs.

  • Clean your dentures with a soft brush

Always use a soft brush to clean your dentures. Using hard brushes might cause damage to your dentures. Additionally, they must be cleaned properly throughout the day, especially after eating or drinking.

  • Rinse your dentures thoroughly after eating

When you are done eating, it is important that you rinse your dentures very well. You can clean them with water or, if you prefer, use a mild soap. However, be careful not to let the soap sit on your dentures for too long because it could damage them.
